DeKalb County Police Officer Heroes Fund
The DeKalb County Police Department has received dozens of calls and inquires from the public on how they can make donations to the families of slain officers Eric Barker and Ricky Bryant, Jr. A fund to help support the children of the officers has been set up. Anyone who wishes to donate can go to any Bank of America location and ask for the DeKalb County Police Officer Heroes Fund. Special thanks are also given to Atlanta Falcon Warrick Dunn and Pittsburg Steeler Allen Rossum who helped establish the account for the families.

Ricky Bryant Jr., 26, and Eric Barker, 33, were shot to death Jan. 16 at an apartment complex where they were working off-duty as security officers. Three men have been charged with murder. Each officer is survived by a wife and four children.

DeKalb School Board votes NOT to sell school property to Sembler
At a called DeKalb Board of Education (BOE) meeting this morning, superintendent Dr. Lewis announced that on Wednesday Sembler Company's president, Jeff Fuqua, presented to the BOE a revised offer to buy DeKalb School of the Arts' 10 acres only. Sembler's previous offer was to purchase 30 acres including DSA, Kittredge School, and the Stadium.

Dr. Lewis recommended and BOE members voted to end negotiations to sell the property to Sembler Company, effective today.

What will happen next?

We await word from Sembler Company of any revision to its plans to develop the 70-acre Park at Briarcliff Apartments without the 30-acre school property. The Park at Briarcliff Apartments is under contract to be sold to Sembler by the DeKalb Housing Authority.

** The Jan. 28 Board of Education public meeting announced previously is cancelled. **

BOE must now decide what to do with the buildings scheduled to be vacated by Kittredge Magnet School, Open Campus and DeKalb School of the Arts (DSA). Dr. Lewis said he is considering the following, but any decisions would require more deliberation:

1) Tear down Open Campus and create green space or soccer field and use it in conjunction with the Stadium
2) Use $10 million SPLOST funding allocated to DSA to renovate the building for DSA
3) Relocate International Center to the Kittredge School building
